PARENTING BEGINS AT 40

WELCOME TO THE 40YROLDDAD

A FIRST TIME DAD'S ADVENTURES IN FATHERHOOD AT THE RIPE OLD 'MIDDLE-AGE' OF 40, AND BEYOND.

Mumma and I tried having kids for over 10 years. 9 failed attempts at IVF, a few miscarriages and a trip to a Balinese Witch Doctor, but still no dice. Then suddenly at the age of 40, we were blessed with our first naturally occurring chatterbox and two years later, blessed again. It is nothing short of an absolute 'miracle'. This blog captures my comedic adventures in fatherhood at the ripe old 'middle-age' of 40 and beyond.

When the NorthPole’s Dirty Dozen conjured the lyrics to the 12 Days of Christmas, how little did they realise that years later, that idea would be pilfered by a group of Dad’s from Downunder.

In the style of the traditional Advent Calendar, for the next 12 days of Christmas, twelve Daddy Bloggers will be posting the answers to life, the universe and everything, as asked by YOU. (Well, maybe not YOU specifically, but possibly someone who looks very much a lot like you…but smells different, or drives a similar car).

There will be one post from each Daddy on each day and with this lineup…

BIG FAMILY little income, Illiterate Infant, Being a Dad, TackleNappy, Torkona, daddownunder, Reservoir Dad, Melbourne Dad, 40YrOldDad, 3am Dad

You could be left wondering…just how secure is our future? (more…)

On this day in 1666, Bert Newton’s younger brother, Sir Isaac Newton, discovered gravity when an apple fell on his head. (Okay, it might not have been this day exactly, but it certainly has a Wednesday “feel” about it). And subsequently, devised the theory of gravity that…

    “What goes up…must come down.”

Obviously, Newton was not a father. Because if he knew anything at all about babies, then he should know the opposite is true…

“What goes down…almost always, at some point…must come back up!”

And so it was, that today, Indy discovered that Newton…

    Was full of sh*t. (more…)

Well, I guess it was inevitable that this day would come.

For close on ten years, our worlds have revolved around each other. She is the world to me and I am the world to her. Soul mates. The love of each other’s lives and we would tell each other every single day…

“I love you more than ANYTHING.”

    And that still holds true.

The birth of our beautiful son only helps to cement those feelings even further…

Buckling our little man into his car seat this morning for a quick Mummy/Bubba visit with Granny, his beaming smile…uh…“beaming” back at us, we kissed and embraced in the garage, our usual fond farewells. My love squeezed me tight and whispered lovingly in my ear…

“I love you more than ANYTHING…except him“. (more…)

My lovely wife is always full of great ideas, the first being, marrying me. A while ago, she did a First Aid Course for Kids at work and because she’s always thinking of me (another thing we have in common), she thought I too, could benefit from learning such things, seeing as I will be the stay-at-home dad, next year. And being the caring, responsible, lovely person she is, she thought her whole Mother’s Group could benefit as well. So, a couple days ago, she organised a Baby/Child First Aid course for us all, conducted by Chantelle from Child Revive First Aid.

Thank you to Meghan, for hosting the event and for having a living room large enough to look like a school bus exploded. (more…)

While Indy was off enjoying Mother’s Group with Mumma, I was invited along by the 360 Immerse Agency, to attend a blogger event for Target Menswear. I guess, to find out exactly what my blog should be wearing this summer?

Which presented a couple questions. First of all, what’s a Blogger Event? And secondly, did I remember to empty the nappy bin this morning? Now that I’m a Dad, rarely do I have consecutive thoughts that are ever related to each other. (Who am I kidding, it’s not because I’m a Dad, it’s because I’m a man). Now, where was I? Oh yes…cheese now comes in a variety of…

Blogger Event:  a special event put on by a respective company/organisation to tout their wares and hopefully generate interest from bloggers; ie: people who write blogs…(for the cheap seats up the back), to share with their multitudes of fans (or the one or two people who don’t press ignore or delete when an update appears in their inbox)…and is NOT an arcade game showdown where you have to get across the road, avoid traffic, jump on the logs, get the fly and watch out for the alligator. That’s Frogger. (Damn…and me with all those pockets full of quarters. Anyone need change for the meter?) (more…)

Your job as a dad, is similar to that of a UFC Cage Fighter, Roman Gladiator, Lion Tamer and/or…being attacked by a grizzly bear!!! Your main objective…

    Show No Fear!

Wait…that last one, you’re supposed to lay down on the ground and pretend to be dead, right? (same diff) 😉

So, when you’re sitting in the doctor’s waiting room waiting to go in for Indy’s 4 month immunisation shots and your wife asks you if you’re nervous…show no fear (see lie, lie, lie) or…lay down on the waiting room floor and pretend to be dead (see geezuz, how old are you? Get off the floor, you’re embarrassing us!).

Sitting in that room looking into those big, sparkling, trusting blue eyes, nonchalantly chewing on those playful little fingers, innocently drooling, completely ignorant of the horrors that await on the other side of that door…I can hardly stand it. I can’t be responsible for lulling him into a false sense of security, then watch his world unravel as he tears my throat apart, choking me to death (ala Homer Simpson style), “Why you little…” (more…)

Just like the sci-fi TV-Series Sliders, each week I feel like I’m thrust through an inter-dimensional portal, right into a brand new world that I never new existed. Only, instead of having a remote control timer that thrusts me into different dimensions and circumstances at the end of every episode, I have a kid…and parenthood…that pushes me through that door, instead.

So, where did my portal take me this week?

To a place of such extraordinary VIP Treatment, the likes of which is usually reserved for royalty and/or astronauts? A luxurious world where privacy, space and convenience meet. A world where modesty, companionship and radiation all flow into one. The fascinating world I speak of, is…

“A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty “Hi Ho Silver, Away!”

It’s amazing how much easier it is to sleep without all the usual gurgling, farting, snorting, cooing, squeaking, squawking that normally goes on of an evening. And now that Indy’s in his own room at the other end of the house…he shouldn’t be able to hear any of it!

That’s right, Indy has saddled up his trusty steed and headed out west to the open pastures of his Big Boy Cot on the sweeping plains (or at least, some light vacuuming), of his very own room. And although he’s still sleeping for about the same length of time (every 3-4 hours), it has improved the quality of sleep, somewhat.

    Not his…ours.

And in the few minutes of actual sleep that we do get, it seems to be a much deeper sleep. Which is why my wife sounds like Barry White(and I sleep with one eye open). (more…)

Oh my God…I felt like I lived an entire lifetime of emotions in 120 minutes. An emotional tug-o-war roller-coasting over four quarters of desperate battle, culminating in the most thrilling 34 seconds of my life…

    Indy’s Conception…

    NO…Indy’s Birth…

NO…(who am I kidding, both of those were epic long performances worthy of a dais placing)

    NO…I speak of course, of…

    The Sydney Swans 2012 Premiership…VICTORY!!!!

And Nick Malceski’s snap floater that wavered for a breathless eternity, 60 metres in the air that held the nations attention, akin to Neil Armstrong’s first gulp of TANG, and landing with a resounding roar through the goal posts to secure victory for the Swans in the 2012 AFL Grand Final, with 34 seconds left on the clock.

    And I missed it.

(Just kidding…) It’s one of those life shattering moments in life that begs the question...

“Where were you the day…” (insert: JR was shot? Hervé Villechaize started Plane Spotting? Jo Frost aka: TV’s Supernanny, correctly pronounced the word “reconize”).  (more…)

What an amazing year so far. Plenty of exciting times and a few bumps along the way. There’s been highs and lows, heartbreaks and tears. Moments of pure and utter joy and others tense with stress and disappointment. All culminating in the most anticipated and stressful 2 hours of our journey together so far.

I’m not talking about Indy. I’m talking about…

    The 2012 AFL Grand Final

And the tremendous journey of our beloved, Sydney Swans!!

And what a journey it has been this year. I won’t bore you with the details (too late), but after spending a majority of weeks on top of the AFL ladder, it seems only right that after knocking off Adelaide in the first final, we got to face off against our arch nemeses, Collingwood (see: Mamma’s team), for a shot at the Grand Final. After suffering 10 straight losses to Collingwood (see: wash my mouth out with soap), to finally get up and defeat them by 26 points in the Swans’ Jude Bolton’s 300th Career Game, to give us a shot at the Grand Final in the same year that my son was born (take a breath before I explode)…is the stuff that dreams and Hollywood Movies are made of.
